Stash Report Sunday 12/28/14

Here we are at the last Stash Report Sunday for 2014. My fabric goals for the year were to use at least 100 yards this year, and to use at least as much as I added to my stash. I was successful on the first goal, but not the second. I have been buying fabric like crazy lately, and that killed my stash reduction efforts.

I received gift certificates for two local quilt shops as Christmas gifts (my husband knows what I like!) One of the shops was having a sale all weekend, so I used my gift there already. I got a couple of pieces to use for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge next year, plus a piece to make into pj pants for my favorite Santa collector.

The only usage for the week was 1/2 yard for the border on my Rainbow LeMoyne baby quilt.

Stash Report Sunday 12/21/14

I have fallen terribly far behind on blog posts lately. Between preparing for Christmas, a five-day business trip to New York, and a crazy schedule at work, quilting has been pushed to the back burner.

My stash report has taken quite a hit recently. I had been doing well at limiting my purchases all year, but for some reason my will power seems to have totally disappeared. I couldn't resist the amazing Black Friday sale prices at Connecting Threads, and I stocked up on some of my favorites. Mostly lots of reds and blues, plus some neutrals, so I foresee some great Quilts of Valor from this group.

I also had a gift certificate from one of my favorite local quilt shops, Intown Quilters in Decatur. The expiration date was the end of the year, so I used it to get some lovely batiks on clearance. No idea what these will become.

My recent trip to New York ended up being mostly work and not much time to play. However, a co-worker and I did find time one afternoon to visit Mood Fabrics of Project Runway fame. I also made it to the City Quilter, one of very few quilt shops in NYC. They have many wonderful New York themed fabrics, but I limited myself to a few black & white prints.

My only fabric used in the last two weeks was 1 yard for the sashing on my Rainbow LeMoyne baby quilt, and that just happened today. I will have four days off for Christmas, and I am counting on spending some serious time at my sewing machine. Unfortunately, I am unlikely to meet my goal of using more fabric than I add for the year.

Used this week:                           1.0 yards
Used year to date:                  124.375 yards

Stashed this week:                   34.625 yards

Stash Report Sunday 12/7/14

The Christmas sewing deadlines are looming, and I have been busy busting through some of my stash to finish gifts. This week I made a pair of pajama pants (that also accounts for the fabric added for the week) and a tote bag. Over the last several weeks I have also stitched background hexies to three of my Rainbow Scrap Challenge Hexie Stars.

Used this week:                           5.25 yards

Stash Report Sunday 11/30/14

For the second time this month, I am reporting more fabric added to my stash than used. Holiday travel has limited my time to quilt, but did give me the chance to visit Nancy's Notion retail store and do some shopping. I got mostly 1/4 yard pieces, plus a larger piece of the background fabric on the right.

As for usage, I finished the quilting and binding on the hearts baby quilt I made for our niece's baby girl, due in January. I will show that tomorrow on Design Wall Monday.

Added this week:  4 yards from Nancy's Notions
Used this week:  1.75 yards for backing & binding on baby quilt

Used this week:                           1.75 yards

Stash Report Sunday and 15 Minutes to Stitch

Kate over at Life in Pieces has been reporting on her efforts to stitch for 15 minutes every day. She had previously hosted the 15 Minute Challenge, and that really motivated me to make time for at least a little time spent quilting every day. Very often, that 15 minutes turns into 30 minutes or an hour.

I have managed to get my 15 minutes or more every day so far in November. Unfortunately, I don't seem to have a lot to show for it, but I know I am making progress on a few different projects.

As for my stash report, this is the first week in quite awhile that shows more fabric added than fabric used. I had ordered a piece of fabric from Joann's for a Christmas gift, and since I was already paying for shipping, decided to add another fabric I've had my eye on. Unfortunately, the gift fabric was out of stock, but I do have this lovely print to add to my stash. I'm going to take a look at how well it works with my Rainbow LeMoyne blocks.

Fabric used was 1/4 yard for more Tell It to the Stars border blocks. I think I have 14 more of those blocks to make.

Used this week:                             .25 yards
Used year to date:                   115.875 yards

Stashed this week:                        2  yards

Stash Report Sunday 11/9/14

There was a small amount of fabric used this week and no additions to the stash. I spent very little time quilting, but I did finish 12 border blocks for the Tell It to the Stars mystery quilt. These blocks are proving to be much more challenging than I expected. I still need to make 22 more blocks.

Used this week:                             .375 yards

Stash Report Sunday 11/2/14

For the first time in about six weeks, I have an addition to my stash to report, and I couldn't be happier! Back in mid-October, hand-dyer extraordinaire Vicki Welsh of Field Trips in Fiber had a giveaway each day for a week. I was the very lucky winner of the final day's prize, which was 6 gradient pieces, 1/2 yard each. I think it was meant to be because Vicki drew the names of the winners on my birthday. Look at all the gorgeous colors!

Vicki Welsh gradients

Fortunately, I used up enough fabric this week to offset the addition of the gradients. I used 1.5 yards on the Fall Spinners blocks that I showed on Design Wall Monday,  1.75 yards making blue and yellow Quarter Log Cabin blocks, and 3/8 yard on background hexagons for my Scrap Hexie Stars and Snowflakes.

Used this week:                           3.625 yards
Used year to date:                   115.25 yards

Stashed this week:                      3.0  yards

Stash Report Sunday 10/26/14

Another week with just a small amount of fabric used, 1/2 yard for 12" LeMoyne Star blocks in brown and black/grey.

No fabric added for the week, but I'm having a hard time resisting all the online deals. My sewing room is jam-packed with fabrics, yet I have been thinking about getting some new additions. I am trying to stay strong and resist, but I don't know how long I can hold out! This weekly stash report does help motivate me to keep using fabric rather than adding more. Thanks, Judy!

Stash Report Sunday 10/5/14

My stash usage this week was small, just 1/2 yard for more Boston Fiesta blocks and 1/8 yard for my last orange hexie snowflake.

I made a brief visit to a quilt show yesterday, but didn't have enough time to visit the vendors. It's just as well I guess--kept me from adding to my stash!

Stash Report Sunday 9/28/14

We had a very busy week at work, but that meant I got to leave early on Friday to make up for some extra time I had put in earlier in the week. It's amazing the difference between getting off at 4:00 p.m. instead of 6:00--so much extra time for quilting! I spent the whole evening, plus part of Saturday getting my heart blocks joined together with sashing and setting triangles. Maybe I can figure out a border today. I will post a photo of the whole quilt tomorrow on Design Wall Monday, but here is a portion of it.

I also finished my scrappy orange hexie star and snowflake for September at the Rainbow Scrap Challenge. You can see them on yesterday's post.

Used this week:                           2.375 yards
Used year to date:                   109.0 yards

Stash Report Sunday 9/21/14

It seemed like I spent plenty of time sewing this week, but I didn't use up much fabric. I finished my blue and orange 12" LeMoyne Star blocks, which you can see in yesterday's post. I also finished 16 more blocks for Boston Fiesta, an old UFO that I am using as my leader/ender project.

Stash Report Sunday 9/14/14

I had another great week of stash usage. Switching around between multiple projects time seems to be working out well for me. I made another pair of pajama pants, added sashing to the Tell It to the Stars mystery quilt, plus remade one of the blocks. I also finished my 8 LeMoyne Star blocks for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge, made some sample blocks for a baby quilt, and pulled out an old UFO to use as my leader/ender project.

The only addition for the week was a half-yard piece that I bought from a vendor at the Quilting Live! show yesterday. Here is my new fabric, plus the Seminole-pieced zipper pouch I made in a workshop.

Totals: Rainbow LeMoyne--8 stars           .5 yd.
Baby quilt--3 sample blocks                     7"
Tell It to the Stars--remake one block       6"
Fall batik pajama pants                         2.5 yd.
Tell It to the Stars sashing                    1.25 yd.
Boston Fiesta--8 blocks                           .5 yd

Used this week:                          5.125 yards

Stash Report Sunday 9/7/14

I have lots to report this week, both fabric used and fabric added. One project goes back a few months and is finally ready for showing, others are brand new.

A group of us at work joined together to make a signature quilt for the retirement of our boss Carol. I was in charge of the design and getting all the fabrics. We used batiks in many shades of blues, greys, tans and browns. The blocks were joined together and borders added on Friday. Carol always urged us to use a thimble for hand sewing, so we included a thimble block on the front, and the backing fabric is covered with thimbles. I am counting both fabric used and fabric added to my stash for this project. The white fabric for the signature areas was from my stash, as were many of the batiks, but I ended up with the leftovers of other fabrics purchased for the quilt.

Last week I showed the layer cake of "Surrounded by Love" that I had won. I was thinking it would be perfect for a very girly baby quilt with the many prints in pink, red and white. Only a few days later, I got an email from our pregnant niece letting us know that she is having a girl! It's meant to be! Yesterday I went shopping for a solid pink to use with the layer cake, and I also found a flannel print that will be perfect for a backing. That is an addition of 5 yards to my stash. I haven't decided on a baby quilt pattern yet, but I am considering several options.

My other purchase yesterday was this beautiful print from Patty Young's Modkid Studio. There is something I really love about the color combination, and I am thinking it would make a good color palette for a future quilt.

I got inspired to make some new pajama pants this week. I made a pair for myself from a tropical print, and a short pair for my husband, the FSU fan. They aren't quilts, but they are from quilting fabrics, so I am including the fabric used in my stash report.

Totals:
Signature quilt:  2.75 yds. used, 1 yd. added
Baby quilt fabrics:  5 yards added
Grey/teal/yellow print:  1.75 yds. added
2 pair pajama pants:  4.5 yds. used

Used this week:                          7.25 yards
Used year to date:                    100.0 yards

Stashed this week:                     7.75  yards
Stashed year to date:                97.5 yards

Net year to date:
                   2.5 yards used

Hurray! I made my goal of using at least 100 yards this year (and should go well past that number in the remaining four months.) I'm still hanging on at using up more fabric than I add.

Stash Report Sunday 8/31/14

Here we are at the end of August, two-thirds of the way through 2014! At this point I am feeling pretty good about my stash report. My goal for the year was to use at least 100 yards, which is less than 8 yards away. Looks like I should reach that goal easily.

The other goal, and this will be tougher, is to use more fabric than I add to the stash. There isn't much difference between my yardage used vs. yardage added numbers, and one good sale could knock it all out of whack. I will just keep plugging away at my current projects, and see how it all turns out in December.

This week I used just over 2 yards. I made a pillowcase for my QOV Bowties Quilt, made the binding for my Scrappy Sampler, remade one of the blocks for the Tell It to the Stars mystery, and finished adding background hexies to my green hexie star.

QOV pillowcase

There hadn't been any additions to my stash since early July, which coincided with my return to work. All those Labor Day sales are tempting, but so far I have been able to resist. However, I do have one lovely addition to report. I was the lucky winner of the Ironing Board challenge at Jo's Country Junction. Jo sent me a layer cake of Moda's "Surrounded by Love" by Deb Strain. I am dreaming of a very girly baby quilt with these fabrics.

Used this week:                          2.125 yards
Used year to date:                    92.75 yards

Stashed this week:                      3.0  yards
Stashed year to date:               89.75 yards

Stash Report Sunday 8/24/14

This week's stash usage may be my largest amount used in a single week all year! I realize it isn't a lot compared to how much some people go through, but I feel very good about getting my numbers back into the black.

I used 4.5 yards for the backing of my QOV Bowties, 1.375 yards for the August blocks for Tell It to the Stars mystery, and .75 yards for a new ironing board cover. No fabric added again this week. It has been more than a month since I got any new fabric. I may be going into withdrawal!

Used this week:                          6.625 yards
Used year to date:                   90.625 yards

Stashed this week:                          0  yards

Stash Report Sunday 8/17/14

Despite a very busy week at work, I made good progress on my stash reduction efforts. I finished the borders on two different quilt tops and pieced the backing for one of them, using a total of 4.5 yards of fabric.

I showed the finished top for my scrappy greens Crossroads quilt in yesterday's post. Here is the back that I pieced yesterday. The selvage of the brighter green fabric said it was from 1996, which is not long after I started quilting. This fabric has definitely aged long enough! The back just needs a good pressing, then it can get layered and pin basted.

The other quilt that got the borders finished this week was my QOV Bowties quilt, which has been waiting for those borders for more than a month. It feels good to have that done too. I will show the finished top on my design wall tomorrow.

No fabric added again this week.  Once I piece a back for the QOV, I should be back to having used more than I have added for the year!

Used this week:                          4.5  yards
Used year to date:                    84.0  yards

Stashed this week:                          0  yards

Stash Report Sunday 8/10/14

This has been a decent week on the stash reduction front. I finished the binding on the Musical Stars baby quilt (photo tomorrow), and I made 12 scrappy green Crossroads blocks.

I also discovered that I never subtracted the fabric that was used for some teal/turquoise Crossroads blocks that I made last year, so I am counting that now. I wasn't crazy about these blocks when I made them, but they have grown on me. Maybe I will make some more with other colors like hot pink scraps. The grey background has faint designs in turquoise, pink and lavender.

No fabric added this week. My red number is getting smaller!!

Used this week:                          2.75  yards
Used year to date:                    79.5  yards

Stashed this week:                          0  yards
