Finishing Up the Purple Pieces

Most of the participants in the Rainbow Scrap Challenge have moved on to orange, our color of the month for May, but I still have a couple of purple projects to finish. I had some extra 9-patch and HST blocks left over from the Pretty in Purple quilt, shared in last Saturday's post. Instead of putting those extra blocks away in a box, I turned them into two placemat tops. After finishing, they will get donated to Meals on Wheels through our quilt guild.

Most of my quilting projects have ground to a halt over the last week, but it was for a very good reason--we went to Paducah! It is always so inspiring to attend a major show and see all of the amazing quilts on display. I haven't had much time to go through my photos yet, but I pulled out a couple to share with the RSC quilters.

Since the quilt show was in April, I will start with a fantastic purple quilt. This is "Heat Lightning" by Amy Pabst, the 1st place winner in Small Wall Quilts--Stationary Machine Quilted. The finished size of this quilt is only 39" x 45", and I believe the blocks measure 3" each, with those tiny little logs finishing at 1/8" wide. Unbelievable!

The next quilt is one of my favorites featuring orange, our color for May. This is "Sunset Over Catalina Island" by Nancy Eisenhauer. The colors in this quilt really spoke to me!

This was my favorite rainbow quilt from the show. It was in one of the special exhibits featuring primarily Kaffe Fassett fabrics. The quilt is "Jack's Chain", hand pieced by Ann Zemke and quilted by Lori Allison. I made a version of this same pattern a few years ago, my Ring Cycles quilt, which is still waiting to be quilted.

Be sure to check out all of the wonderful scrappy projects at the Rainbow Scrap Challenge every Saturday, and at Oh Scrap! over at Quilting is more fun than Housework on Sunday.

Happy quilting everyone!

Design Wall Monday 5/2/2022

The pink theme seems to be continuing on my design wall for yet another week. I pieced a backing yesterday to go with the Uneven 9Patch baby quilt top that I shared in last week's post.

I like to use flannel as the backing for baby quilts, and I didn't have enough of any single fabric, so I combined several different pink flannels for this scrappy back. It measures about 44" x 51".

The next step is to cut some batting, then get this little quilt layered and ready for quilting.

My quilting time has been very limited lately due to recent travels. These have included a trip last week to Paducah for the AQS show. It was so much fun to be back in Paducah with the city overrun by quilters everywhere, and the quilts at the show were amazing as usual. I haven't yet had time to go through my photos and prepare a blogpost of my favorites, but I hope to do so soon.

You can see the winners of the top prizes at the AQS website HERE. This was one of my favorites from the show. It is called "Orange Crushed It" by Andrea Brokenshire of Round Rock, TX.  It won "Best Wall Quilt, Stationary Machine Workmanship."

There are also more views of this quilt at The Quilt Show website, including very close shots of the incredible applique work and the confetti background. You will be amazed--take a look HERE.

Happy quilting!

Visions in Violet 4/26/14

The past week has been such a flurry of activity, leaving little time for quilting. My mother arrived on Monday, and the two of us headed to Paducah for the big quilt show on Wednesday. In the past, my sister has also gone with us, but she was unable to come along this year. We missed having her along, but tried our best to have a good time anyway.

As always, the quilt show was amazing! I didn't take as many photos as usual this year because I decided to buy the show CD with photos of all the quilts. I discovered today that very few of the quilts I photographed feature purple, but here are a couple of wonderful rainbow quilts.

The little beauty above is "Electric Rainbow" by Caryl Brix of Wautoma, WI. It measures only 11" x 16" and was a contestant in the miniature quilts category. The miniature quilts at Paducah are displayed in a glass case, which is the reason for the reflections in my photo. The pattern is adapted from "Electric Slide" in American Patchwork and Quilting magazine.

The fabulous quilt above is "Supernova" by Diane Phillips of Ennis, MT. The pattern is "Glacier Star" by Judy Niemeyer, and it measures 58" x 59". There are 3000 crystals sprinkled over the quilt. This quilt was entered in the small wall quilts, longarm/midarm machine quilted category. I love the rainbow colors on black background.

The only additions to my rainbow blocks collection for this week were two purple LeMoyne Stars on light background, joining five earlier stars on black. The bottom star is going to be remade with the lighter background. I have also done a little stitching on my purple hexies, but have not completed anything.

Check out the Rainbow Scrap Challenge posts every Saturday to see how others are using up their scraps. So many beautiful projects!
