Stash Report Sunday 12/27/15

It was a very quilty Christmas for me, but none of the gifts I received were fabric, so no effect on my stash report. I got a rotating cutting mat, a swing-arm lamp for my cutting table, and the book The New Hexagon by Katja Marek. Along with the book, I have been signed up for the new Glorious Hexagons club at a local quilt shop (we will be making blocks from the book) and got two quilt shop gift certificates--those will do some damage to the stash report!

For the first year since I started tracking my stash usage and additions, I managed to achieve my goal of using more fabric than I added for the year. I added a total of 150 yards, almost the identical amount as last year, but this year I used more than 167 yards. I finished in the black!! My last usage for the year was 3 yards of Santa fabric on a pair of pajama pants for my favorite Santa collector, my husband.

TOTALS:
Used this week:                   3.0 yards
Used year to date:           167.25 yards

Stashed this week:                0.0  yards
Stashed year to date:        150.0 yards

Stash Report Sunday 12/20/15

No fabric added to my stash this week--hurray!! I used 3 yards for a pair of pajama pants made as a Christmas gift for a nephew. He loves flying and hopes to become a pilot, so the Blue Angels fabric was perfect for him.

There's only one more stash report left for the year, and I am so hopeful of finishing in the black. I have at least one more Christmas gift to finish, and I'm not counting the yardage I have used so far on Bonnie Hunter's Allietare mystery until I get the blocks put together. As long as I don't go crazy buying fabric at some end-of-the-year sale, I may finish with more used than added for the first time since I started tracking my stash usage.

TOTALS:
Used this week:                   3.0 yards
Used year to date:           164.25 yards

Stashed this week:                0.0  yards
Stashed year to date:        150.0 yards

Stash Report Sunday 12/13/15

There are only two more stash reports left for 2015 after this one. For the first time since I started tracking my stash usage in 2012, this could be the year when I actually end up using more fabric than what comes in. That has been my goal every year, but I have never reached that goal. Just a couple short weeks ago, I was over 20 yards in the black; now I am much lower than that. The numbers have been getting closer together, but I have a few projects in the works that should help balance out any end-of-the-year purchases (fingers crossed!)

I had one addition of 3 yards this week for a secret Christmas project. My only usage was 7/8 yard for the remaining String Pinwheel blocks that I made for Kat's Covered in Love block drive.

Stash Report Sunday 12/6/15

Only a few more stash reports left for 2015. There's a good chance I will finish the year in the black for the first time since I started tracking my stash usage in 2012. I just need to stop buying fabric from the many holiday deals going on this month, but that's easier said than done. It's so hard to resist fabric when it's on sale!

This week I used 3/8 yard on String Pinwheel blocks as part of Kat's block drive for Covered in Love. I also added 7 yards of a patriotic print that will become the back for a Quilt of Valor.

Stash Report Sunday 11/29/15

I keep thinking there will be a significant reduction in my stash of fabrics because I have been using more than usual this year, but I keep on buying more fabric too. The shelves in my sewing room are still bulging with yardage. There are a couple of projects I hope to finish for Christmas that will help reduce my numbers.

This week I used 4.5 yards for the borders and back of my Circling the Rainbow quilt (see it HERE.) I also bought 1 yard of RWB for more Quilts of Valor and 5.5 yards for a secret project.

TOTALS:
Used this week:                    4.5  yards
Used year to date:             160.0 yards

Stashed this week:               6.5  yards

Stash Report Sunday 11/22/15

I thought this would be a week with a good amount of fabric used and none added. Then I realized that there wasn't enough of the fabric I wanted to use for the back of my applique circles quilt. That meant a trip to Joann's for more circle print. Fortunately, I did finish off the back for another quilt and made two batches of blocks.

Usage:
Back for Boston Fiesta           5.0 yards
Green & brown Bowties           .5 yards
Leaf blocks                         1.25 yards

Above is the fabric I used to make the back for my Boston Fiesta quilt (you can see the quilt top HERE.) This is a huge print--the large flowers are about the size of my fist! I had previously pieced a different backing for this quilt, but this was always the fabric I really wanted to use and I decided to just go for it!

Here is the fabric I bought for the back of my applique circles quilt (in progress HERE.) I've been making lots of pieced quilt backs lately, but each of these are made from a single large-scale print. I love the bright colors in this fabric!

TOTALS:
Used this week:                     6.75 yards
Used year to date:             155.50 yards

Stashed this week:                  3.0 yards
Stashed year to date:        133.50 yards

Net year to date:              22 yards used

Stash Report Sunday 11/15/15

The bad news for my stash report is that I bought over 10 yards of fabric from Connecting Threads recently. The good news--the 5 yard and 7 yard pieces I ordered for quilt backs were not available. Their online inventory program let me down, but it doesn't hurt my numbers quite so much.

I bought quite a few black and white prints. These are all 1/4 or 1/2 yard pieces.

I also got some RWB fabrics, plus one limey green just because I liked it.

I don't have any usage to report, but I hope to make better progress next week.

TOTALS:
Used this week:                          0 yards

Stash Report Sunday 11/8/15

My stash totals didn't change much either way this week, but at least I used a little more than I added. I made 30 bowtie blocks and the last 10 circle applique blocks, both projects for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge. I also made a pillowcase to go with a recent Quilt of Valor completion (which you can see HERE.)

As for additions, I bought a few more black-on-white prints to replenish my collection of them. I am especially excited by the multi-print piece that is shown across the bottom of the photo. Love the great variety of patterns!

The other recent addition to my "stash" is not fabric, but a wonderful new book to add to my already full bookshelves. I have been trying to stop buying more quilting books, but couldn't resist this beauty. It is the long-awaited book chronicling the "Infinite Variety" display that was held in New York in 2011.

The book starts off with a series of very interesting essays. The first one is by Joanna Rose, the owner of the 653! quilts that were shown. The other essays are written by several of the people who put the show together. I loved learning more about how this incredible show was conceived and mounted.

Of course, the real stars of the book are the photographs. There are several pages with shots of the show, sharing the very creative way the designers displayed the quilts.

There are individual photos of all the quilts (did I mention that there are 653 of them?) Each quilt includes a brief listing that identifies the pattern name and finished size of the quilt. In some cases they also list location or year that the quilt was made. The quilts are grouped into chapters by style of quilt: log cabin, stars, applique, etc.

I am thrilled to own this gorgeous book and look forward to many happy hours spent studying the pages for inspiration. My quilting bucket list just keeps getting longer!

Stash Report Sunday 11/1/15

I finished making a quilt back for the Wonky Stars quilt top that my sister and I made together. We followed the instructions for Alycia's block drive, which you can find HERE. I hope to get a photo of the back tomorrow before I pack it up and send the top and the back to Alycia. Here is the main fabric I used for the back.

This is the kind of print I find very hard to use anywhere other than a quilt back. The largest circles measure almost 7" across. I was so sad to have used it all up on this quilt back that I decided to get some more from Connecting Threads next time it was on sale. When I checked their website on Friday, I discovered that it was already on clearance, and I just managed to get the last of it. Of course, I couldn't resist ordering all sorts of other fabrics that were also on sale. My stash report is going to take a big hit when that order arrives. I'd better keep sewing until then!

TOTALS:
Used this week:                       5.0 yards

Stash Report Sunday 10/25/15

Before I sat down to write my stash report, I was happily thinking that I could count some fabric as used but had no additions for the week. WRONG! I forgot that I stopped at Joann's last Sunday afternoon to look for some fabric to back a baby quilt. I found this wild tie-dye flannel that was on super clearance so I bought what they had left, 4.5 yards. That will be enough to back at least 2, probably 3 baby quilts.

My usage was less than the incoming, but I am very happy to report a finished quilt top! My sister and I have been making Wonky Stars for Alycia's QOV block drive. I joined all of the Wonky Stars blocks together, then added a border of 3.5" squares around the stars. You can see about 90% of the quilt here--altogether it has 6 stars across and 8 down, plus the border of scrappy squares all the way around. If only I didn't have to photograph my design wall through a doorway!

TOTALS:
Used this week:                  1.375 yards
Used year to date:            141.75 yards

Stash Report Sunday 10/18/15

The fabric enabler has struck again! Yesterday my sweet husband suggested that I ride along with him when he went to his morning rehearsal. Not too far from the rehearsal were three quilt shops, and I visited every one of them and got fabric at every single shop. Best of all, he was buying! It was an early birthday present--he knows what makes me happy.

I was looking to replenish my stock of black and white prints, and got 12 different fabrics, all 1/4 yard pieces. I also got two RWB pieces that will be great for Quilts of Valor. I had used the light one with the music notes before, and was very happy to find more of it yesterday. The stripe may become sashing and/or border on a QOV that my sister and I are making together.

As for usage, I finished up 30 brown bowtie blocks for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge and 6 Wonky Stars for Alycia's QOV block drive. I also made 4 Twinkle Star blocks for the Block Lotto, but they all came out a little small. Maybe I will keep them for myself or see if I can fix them to end up a smidge bigger. They are too pretty to not be used somewhere.

Stash Report Sunday 10/11/15

There hasn't been much change to my stash this week. Not much time for quilting lately, and my main project has been progressing very slowly. I did use 3/8 yard for the setting triangles on my applque circles quilt. I hope to have a photo of it to show tomorrow.

Stash Report Sunday 10/4/15

I discovered a quick and easy way to make some headway at reducing my stash--give it away! A couple weeks ago I participated in the 2015 Fall Quilty Orphan Adoption Event. I find it very difficult to give up any of my fabric stash or quilt UFOs, even those that have been hanging around for years, but it felt great to find new homes for two of my old projects. You can see photos of the projects I put up for adoption HERE. If you are interested in having any of your "orphans" adopted, watch for the next Orphan Adoption Event in March over at Quilting is more fun than Housework.

My stash addition for the week came from the two little charm packs of polka dots that I won in a giveaway. More cute fabric!

Stash Report Sunday 9/27/15

For the second week in a row, there were no additions to my stash this week. It feels so good to be clearing out a little space in my sewing room!

A couple days ago I found out about a baby shower for a co-worker that is being held on Monday. Wait a second, did you say this Monday?! Unfortunately, I don't have any baby quilts in reserve, so I made a cute quilt-as-you-go baby quilt yesterday and will finish the binding on it today.

Here are the fabrics I used in the baby quilt. The print on the left is the focus fabric, and the monkey print is the back of the quilt. I will show the finished quilt tomorrow (I hope!) and maybe include instructions for how I made it.

Stash Report Sunday 9/20/15

For the first time in almost a month, there were no additions to my stash this week. Woohooo! It's time to get back to stash busting!

I made 28 Wonky Star blocks for Alycia's block drive. My sister has also been making blocks, and we are going to combine our efforts and put them all together into a Quilt of Valor.

In other stash reduction efforts, I have offered up two projects as part of the Quilty Orphan Adoption over at Cynthia's blog. You can read about my "orphans" HERE, then go check out the others available for adoption at Quilting is more fun than Housework. It's not too late to join in--the link up is still open all day Sunday. Maybe one of your unloved projects could find a new home!

Stash Report Sunday 9/13/15

This week turned out to be a draw as far as stash busting efforts. I bought some fabric, but I also used the same amount. No change to my total for the year.

I showed the two fabrics that I bought in yesterday's post. Both are intended to become quilt backs. Some of my usage for the week was making a little quilt top to go with one of those backings.  Here is the group of fabrics I pulled. I took black and white photos of the fabrics to make sure I had the order right for the gradation of light to dark.

The quilt top is based on this tutorial by Jasmine over at Quilt Kisses. She has recently made 13 little quilts using this design. I changed my strip size just a bit from hers, and also made the border wider. It was very quick and easy. I think it took me almost as long to choose my fabrics for this as it did to get it put together.

Stash Report Sunday 9/6/15

There has been lots of cutting and sewing happening in my sewing room this week, but nothing completed. No fabric used to report.

In a weak moment, I ordered some fabric from Connecting Threads (at least it was all on sale!) I got mostly RWB prints, plus a couple of lime green and blue pieces to join the others that I have been collecting for a new project. I must have been in a stripey mood--I didn't realize until the order arrived that almost all of my choices were stripes.

Stash Report Sunday 8/23/15

My stash report this week shows some fabric going out and some coming in. The outgoing was 1/8 yard for background hexies on my orange hexie star, plus 5.25 yards for the 9Patch UFO top that I have been working on all week. I finished putting the top together yesterday, and I will try to get photos of it later today.

The incoming fabric is a Moda layer cake that I won in a giveaway from the Martingale Publishing blog. It is called "LOL" from Me and My Sister Designs. Check out all the wonderful prints! I am envisioning a cute girly quilt. Free fabric--always a treat! I also won a 10-spool package of lovely Aurifil threads.
