Woven Ribbons for Project Quilting 16.2: Ombre

Ombre is the theme for the second challenge of Season #16 of Project Quilting, hosted by Kim at Persimon Dreams and Trish at Quilt Chicken. Participants are required to use an ombre or gradient in their project. I love working with gradients of colors, so this challenge is right up my alley!

I started by looking through the various ombre projects I have saved on Pinterest, plus patterns I already own, both digital and paper. This Woven Sunrise pattern was a leading contender, but I didn't want to rush through it, so it will wait for another time.

Instead of the Woven Sunrise, I decided to do a design that I've wanted to remake for several years, Woven Ribbons. My first time making this pattern happened back in 2004-05. I bought the pattern and an 8-step gradient bundle to make it. I loved the way the fabrics worked together, but ended up giving the quilt to a friend several years ago.

There were scraps left of the gradient bundle and the background batik fabric from the original quilt. I scaled the pattern down a bit and made a smaller version for this week's challenge. This is my entry for the Project Quilting Challenge 16.2: Ombre--Woven Ribbons #2.

Woven Ribbons #2, 21.75" x 26.5"

The gradient sections are stitched in the ditch around each set, and the batik background is stippled.  The binding was made from the same batik. The colors in these last two photos are more true than the shot of the first version hanging in my friend's stairway.

Check out all the different projects inspired by this week's Project Quilting theme at Kim's blog, Persimon Dreams. The next Project Quilting challenge will be posted there at noon CST on Sunday, February 2nd. Come join the fun!

Happy quilting!

Finally Finished

There are some quilts that have a deadline or specific reason to be finished (gifts, quilt show entries, etc.) and they generally get done in a timely manner. Then there are the quilts that are started with no specific goal or plan for their future. Those are the quilts that might hang around unfinished in my sewing room, sometimes for a very long time.

That was the case with my Woven Ribbons quilt. I remember exactly when and where I bought the pattern and fabrics for this quilt, a smallish quilt shop (since closed) in St. Paul, Minnesota in the summer of 2004. I thoroughly enjoyed piecing the quilt and was very happy with the fabric choices and the way the top turned out. I'm not sure exactly when I had it quilted, probably 2007 or 2008, and it has been hanging around needing binding ever since.

I had put this quilt on my 2017 UFO Challenge list, and it's number came up in June. I pulled the quilt out and had it hanging on the closet door, but the binding still didn't get finished. Sometime in July I saw it hanging there and realized "I know exactly the person who would love this quilt." It was a friend at work who was moving away to a new job in South Dakota. That was the motivation I needed! Within a few days, the quilt had a binding and hanging sleeve. My friend did indeed love it--in fact, she was wearing the same colors that are in the quilt on the day I gave it to her.

Just a couple days ago I got a message from her with this photo of the Woven Ribbons quilt hanging in their front stairs. She let me know how much they love the quilt, which tells me that giving it to her was the perfect choice. I think the quilt looks right at home in their stairway!

Strangely enough, now I am missing that quilt and thinking about making another one with different fabrics!

Getting It Done--May/June 2013

It's hard to believe that our next Get It Done list will take us into the second half of 2013. Posting this list at Patchwork Times has really helped keep me focused on reaching my goals for each month.

GOALS FOR MAY:  I was able to finish 4 of my 5 goals for May, plus one extra project (quilted and bound my flag quilt.)

1.  Dancing Stars--make 8-10 blocks in this month's color (blue) for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge.  10 blocks done 5/24

2.  Scrappy Sampler BOM--make this month's set of blocks.  Done 5/22

3.  Zigzag quilt--machine quilting + binding.  Done 5/26

4.  Woven baby quilt--machine quilting  Done 5/3

5.  "Curves & Cornerstones" quilt--begin making the additional 12 blocks needed.  haven't touched it

GOALS FOR JUNE:

I have spent a good deal of time going through my UFOs and unquilted tops. It is a large collection, and I am very motivated to finish up some of those projects. I go back to work in six weeks, just after July 4th, and I think I should be able to finish at least a couple of my old projects before then (plus keep up with current BOMs.)

1.  Dancing Stars--make 8-10 blocks in this month's color (yellow) for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge.

2.  Scrappy Sampler BOM--make this month's set of blocks.

3.  Bind Woven Ribbons quilt.

4.  Finish Storm at Sea hanging sleeve, prep for quilt show.

5.  Quilt and bind one more top.

See how well other quilters did at reaching their goals this month and what they hope to accomplish in the month ahead at Patchwork Times.
