Scrappy Rainbow Saturday--Week 43. 2020

October is the last month of the year that gets an official color assigned for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge, and this year it is yellow. Once we get to November and December, we can either make blocks in neutral colors, or we can catch up on any colors that are unfinished, or we can start joining our rainbow blocks into quilts!

Here is my yellow Scrappy Bear Paw block for October. I love working with yellow--so bright and cheery!

Scrappy Bear Paw, 14" block

Soon I will need to figure out how to set these blocks together. I keep looking at them set on-point, but that means figuring out what to do for the side triangles. I could do half blocks around the outside like this photo shows (the two side blocks are full blocks folded in half.) To do this version would require remaking the blocks for the side triangles, unless I just want to slice them in half and end up losing a bit in the seam allowances. I would also need to make two more blocks for this setting.

Another on-point option would be to use single paws in the setting triangles. I wouldn't need to make any more blocks for this one, but I'd need another fabric to fill out those setting triangles.

Option number 3 is a straight setting, which would need two more blocks made. I could easily add a tan/brown block and a black/grey block to the collection.

As usual, decision making is hard for me. That's why so many of my quilt projects get bogged down at this point. I need to just make a choice and go with it! I will keep you posted when that happens.

I am linking up with the Rainbow Scrap Challenge on Saturday and with Oh Scrap! at Quilting is more fun than Housework on SundayI hope you are all staying well and getting lots of quilting done!

  1. I love the on point setting for these. A floating bears paw in the setting triangles sounds beautiful to me. What a fun quilt this is turning into.

  2. This is where I get bogged down too...I make piles of blocks and then figure out later what to do with them.

I really like option 2 because it is unusual and looks wonderful.

  5. Very pretty! I guess I'd side with #2 or #3 but, whatever you decide, you will end up with another winner!

  6. I like them on point, also, setting triangles are not something I’ve done often. And never on my own(without pattern directions)! I’ll be watching to see what you decide!

  9. I definitely like them on point. Maybe with the single bear paw idea in the settings. So cheerful!!

  10. Good luck with your decision. I love the on point setting... while letting them float always works, I'm intrigued by option #2. Any way you go on this, it is going to be a spectacular quilt.

  12. I love your bear paws! Setting 2 appeals to me, but with such pretty paws you can't go wrong no matter how you set them!

  13. No advice on which setting to choose, but if you go with the straight set, I'd definitely recommend sashing and cornerstones to compliment the blocks. Great blocks - love the jewel-like colors!

  14. Your blocks are lovely. Only you can make the setting choice, but if you think of what you’ll eventually use (or donate) it for, the necessary finished size might help with the decision. We’ll be here cheering you on whatever you choose!

  16. I vote for the second idea. I like the idea of a single paw in the setting triangles. Original. Good luck with the decision. ;^)

  17. On point setting is my favorite, too. There is just so much more energy in the on-point setting compared to the quicker and easier straight setting. But of course, it's totally up to you. Sometimes you just want to go ahead and be finished already. :-). They are beautiful blocks, especially seeing them all up on the wall together!

  22. I love option two! There is lots of info online to help you figure out setting triangle sizes.

  23. Such colorful blocks! Figuring out the setting is the biggest reason many of my RSC projects are still not finished quilt tops. I like setting number two, it's unexpected. Good luck with finalizing your plans.
