Scrappy Rainbows for the New Year

My goal for the week was to get one quilt top assembled from my 2016 Rainbow Scrap Challenge blocks. Unfortunately, that did not happen. It was partly lack of time, but mostly because I decided to complicate the finishing plan by adding a scrappy piano key border to the top.

Here you can see some partial rows of blocks with sashing, plus a line of bricks across the top that will become part of the border. The border pieces are not stitched together yet. Right now the border is looking a little dark to me; I will have to work in some more light scrap fabrics.

I have no idea what blocks I will make for the RSC next year. Actually, a more accurate statement might be that I have way too many ideas and can't make up my mind which ones to make. For now I will concentrate on getting this quilt top done and wait for inspiration to strike. I didn't start making these blocks until late April of this year, so I'm not going to stress over choosing a new pattern for next year.

Be sure to check out all of the wonderful scrappy projects at the Rainbow Scrap Challenge every Saturday and at Oh Scrap! over at Quilting is more fun than Housework on Sunday.

WISHING EVERYONE A SAFE AND HAPPY NEW YEAR!

  1. I wish I had as much self control as you in picking a project for next year. I look forward to following along with what you do. Your projects are always so gorgeous! Happy new year, Julie!

  2. Love the piano key border you selected. Sometimes the quilt decides how it wants to be finished and it is always best to listen...even if it delays a finish. Enjoy your stitching.

  3. The piano key board border will be worth the effort. Hopefully you'll get in some more sewing time soon. Have a very happy New Year!

  4. I hear you (and resemble that remark) about not knowing what block(s) to make for the RSC 2017. SEW many ideas, but SEW little time!! We'll both figure something out.

  5. I keep a running list of RSC projects I'd like to try, adding and deleting as the mood strikes. The problem is always narrowing it down. I love the block you used this year - I did one of them on my Notting Hill Sampler quilt this year, but the fabric line was very busy and it was not as striking as yours are! There's an art to that, and you have obviously mastered it. Looking forward to seeing this beauty finished! Have a great New Year!

  6. I love your folded blocks all together! I think instead of starting a "new" project for the RSC next year, I'll be using a WIP (which is scrappy blocks) and making blocks for that quilt instead.

  7. Looks great! I like the piano keys. And don't worry, a new block will come to you, probably when you least expect it.

  8. I like that border. Best of all, even more scraps put to great use! Good luck settling on a block for the new year. Hope that one pops to the top of the list.

  9. Can't wait to see the finished top. I'm starting with the purple first thing, while I still have all my purples out for En Provence. Happy New Year and best wishes for a productive and fun year.
