Circling the Rainbow

The Rainbow Scrap Challenge color for October is brown, but I haven't had any time to pull out my brown scraps yet. It has been a very busy week, both at work and in the evenings, and that has kept me from having much time to quilt. I need to get going on cutting squares for my rainbow bowtie blocks.

I decided a couple months ago that I wasn't going to include neutral colors like brown or black in my circle applique quilt.  If you saw my post from two weeks ago, it included a photo of the original quilt by Nancy Mahoney. Her quilt has the blocks arranged in vertical rows of color. I am thinking I might arrange my blocks in a gradation from lightest at the center of the quilt out to darker around the outside. Here's my first attempt with that idea.

There are a few holes in this grouping, and I would like to add enough blocks to end up with the quilt being 8 blocks wide instead of 7. I will need to make some more background squares, then decide where to add more colors. I know there are several lighter green circles around here somewhere just waiting to be stitched down.

Be sure to check out all of the wonderful scrappy projects at the Rainbow Scrap Challenge every Saturday and at Oh Scrap! over at Quilting is more fun than Housework on Sunday.

  1. Your quilt is really getting close to being ready. Seeing all the blocks coming together is such a fun part of the process. I could see some more burgundy reds rounding out the bunch along with some of the lime greens. What are you going to do for the setting triangles along the edges?

    1. The setting triangles will be the same black/white combos as the block backgrounds.

  2. Oh this is so neat! Love how you have begun the arrangement--I like the lightest inside idea too, it should glow that way!! Hugs, Julierose

  3. Your quilt is coming together so nicely. It definitely needs more green. November should take care of that with some limey green circles. Some russet browns this month could fit in around the edges too. Whatever you decide, I'm sure it will be just right!

  4. LOVE your layout idea (and I agree about no browns).

  5. Circling the Rainbow sounds like a GREAT name for your quilt (instead of just the name of this post.) Perhaps, that's not what you intended, but it would totally work!! If YOU don't use it... I WILL!! (If and when I EVER get around to making this quilt.) I liked yours so much that I've already purchased the book. :o))

  6. I really like how this is turning out..... I have too many hand work projects I want to make...but I am bookmarking this one for a couple years out. You could add some darker greens... holler if you need some and I'll send some your way.

  8. stunning. I have enjoyed watching this quilt grow. I wonder if there isn't room to put a few dark browns along the outside. LeeAnna

  12. I am so happy to see this quilt come together. I'm seeing the potential for a hot triangle (yellow/red) cutting into two cools triangles (blue and green).

  16. I love this quilt sooo much! It's going to be so exciting when it's done!
I'm a fan of the lights in the center, too. On my RSC Ohio stars, I'm thinking of doing a few browns and working them in on the outside edges of the warm corner, next to the oranges. Or maybe treating them as the dark end of yellow? Still dithering, since my quilting materials are a couple hundred miles away...
