|Scraptastic Star |
pattern by Melissa Corey
Melissa Corey's Scraptastic Star was the March block for the 2017 Aurifil Designer Block of the Month. The above block is the one she shared on her website. I love that her pattern uses many scraps of a single color for each block, perfect for the RSC! Most of my previous RSC projects have involved making multiple blocks of each color, but generally did not use lots of different fabrics in each block.
Since I had already finished my Scrappy Trips blocks in pink for October, I decided to give this pattern a try and make sure I liked it. Here is my first block. Like Melissa's pattern, this block is made from 2" squares (cut size) and finishes at 12".

Since I have lots of 2.5" squares and strips in my stash, I thought I would see how the block looks with that size too. This block finishes at 16".

I can't decide which size block I like better. I guess that means I will just have to make both sizes each month. I certainly have enough scraps around to do that! I'm also thinking about going even smaller (1.5" cut squares = 8" finished block) or larger (3" squares = 20" block.) Stay tuned...
I am linking up with the Rainbow Scrap Challenge on Saturday and at Oh Scrap! over at Quilting is more fun than Housework on Sunday. Be sure to check out all of the wonderful projects that everyone is sharing!

That is a fun block. One that will use up a lot of scraps too...ReplyDelete
Oh, I'd like that block in any size. I also like that it uses a variety of same colored scraps.ReplyDelete
I love your blocks! I have TONS of 3" squares in my RSC stash- maybe i'll work on this one, too. I haven't decided yet what i'll do for RSC18 (can you even believe it will be RSC18?!) it will be my 5th year, and I still have LOTS AND LOTS of the 3" squares.ReplyDelete
That is a great star block. It can even be done as a leader/ender project. Now you've got me hooked,ReplyDelete
I love that block! It’s a great pattern and fits RSC perfectly. The larger one appeals to me personally, but I know that you’ll do a great job with any size and come up with something fantastic!ReplyDelete
A perfect block for the RSC challenge! I like the bigger block, the star in that one is just more visually pleasing to me. Looking forward to seeing that project develop.ReplyDelete
Beautiful stars! They are a great way to use up those scraps.ReplyDelete
Great block choice! It will be fun seeing these in a rainbow of colors next year. Thanks for sharing with Oh Scrap!ReplyDelete
Cute block and it looks like it would use lots of scraps.ReplyDelete
Oh, the possibilities!!! Happy quilting (with Melissa's block.)ReplyDelete
What a great block - I too have that one printed ... but I love your ideas of sizing!! go go go!ReplyDelete
I'm sad that I've not been able to keep up with the colors. I still need to do blue and now pink too. I need to find time to work on these in string blocks so I can actually get to putting the quilt together.ReplyDelete
