My continuing quest to put together my 2021 Rainbow Scrap Challenge blocks has produced another quilt top! This is my Spikey Rainbow Bowties quilt.
Spikey Rainbow Bowties
60" x 75"
One of my plans for 2021 was to choose an easy block that I could make as a leader and ender project for the entire year. The idea was to average one block every day, therefore I called the project Bowties 365. I wasn't strict about making a block every single day, just trying to end up with that many over time. There were some days when I was doing lots of piecing, which led to multiple bowtie blocks on those days. At other times I was more focused on quilting or hand applique, and ended up not making any bowties on those days.
These 5" bowtie blocks started with many pieces left from a couple of bowtie baby quilts I had made in 2014 and 2015. I added this pretty creamy background fabric with splotches of pink, blue, yellow and lavender. I followed the monthly color prompts for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge.
The unusual layout for my bowtie blocks was inspired by a quilt I had seen on Bonnie Hunter's Quiltville page (you have to scroll down the page to find it.) I figured out that the way to put it all together and not have to sew a ton of long rows was to join the bowtie blocks into big blocks of nine.
My quilt top is made from 180 bowtie blocks set 12 across by 15 high. These blocks were joined into 20 big blocks.
That's another RSC quilt top together! Time to pull out the next set of blocks!

ReplyDeleteWow that didn't look like a bow tie in the little link up photo at Alycia's! What a cool setting, you rocked it out of the park!!! Happy Holidays Julie.
ReplyDeleteA very unique setting of bowtie blocks..LOVE it!! Might have to consider that in the future.
ReplyDeleteLove the bright colors and the spikey design with 4 squares together. Fabulous

ReplyDeleteThat is a really neat design! Love the rainbow of color, too. Congratulations on getting your bowtie blocks to a quilt top!
ReplyDeleteThis may be my favorite bowtie arrangement of all time. I love it!
ReplyDeleteWhat a darling quilt Love that arrangement.
ReplyDeleteSo awesome! That’s about the most unusual bow tie quilt I’ve ever seen! Congrats on a great RSC project!
ReplyDeleteWhat a gorgeous top! Spikey, indeed. I love this layout so much and you did a fantastic job making the rainbow diagonals work out. Great job!
ReplyDeleteJulie, your RSC bow ties look so fresh and modern with this layout! I love it! Thanks for linking up with me for TGIFF!
ReplyDeleteI like your layout, and I love the background. Great finish!
ReplyDeleteThe layout is so much fun. I love that you gave closeup photos. I often stray from these kind of scrappy quilts because I worry about how myriad fabrics will "sit together" in the end. You have proven that scrappy works beautifully in colour families. Sew glad I noticed your quilt on another blog event.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely love this top! Thanks for sharing how you pieced "block sections" together to achieve the design. Bonnie is a master with scraps!
ReplyDeleteYou are doing marvelously well with all your projects!
ReplyDeleteCongrats Julie - what a bright, colorful, cheerful quilt!
ReplyDeleteI love bow tie blocks and the many settings you can use with them, but I have never seen anything like this. Thank you for sharing how you put the quilt together and the link to Bonnie Hunter. It's my favorite pieced quilt that I've seen made in 2021.
