Design Wall Monday

We had another very busy week at work, which left little time for quilting.  I spent some time one evening playing with EQ7 to help me decide on the border design for my Storm at Sea quilt, and I think I have finally made a decision (although I won't make any promises yet.)

The new border design changes the numbers needed for some of the units being made, so I continue cranking out square-in-a-square blocks and rectangles made from Tri-Recs units.  I believe I need 20 more of the top left unit, 14 of the bottom left, 100 or so of the middle one, and 53 of the large unit on the right for the border.

The different units for the border will be arranged to form a ring of stars around the center of the quilt as shown below.  I think it will set off the center very nicely.  The quilt top should finish at 87" x 96" before quilting.

Stash Report Sunday

Once again, I didn't have much time to quilt this week.  We have been very busy at work getting ready for dress rehearsal next week, and I don't have the energy to sew more when I get home.

I did rework the border design for my Storm at Sea quilt, which changed the numbers for the different units being made.  I cut fabric to make more nine-patches for the centers of the border blocks.

Here are my totals:

Used this week:  .5 yards
Used year to date:  2.0 yards
Added this week:  0 yards
Added year to date:  2 yards
Net year to date:  0 yards added/used

Design Wall Monday

There wasn't much time for quilting this week.  We have been very busy at work, plus I had a non-quilting project to get done.  However, I did put together some more blocks for my Storm at Sea quilt.  I decided  to make the quilt a little bigger than originally planned, so I will need to continue making more of the different components.

My design wall is in the hallway opposite the bathroom.  Soon my photos won't show all the pieces that are up because I can't get back any further without the doorway cutting me off. It's not an ideal set-up, but at least there is a place to look at my projects.  I am getting very excited to see this quilt come together!

Design Wall Monday

There wasn't much time for quilting this past week, but I have gotten some parts for my Storm at Sea quilt joined together and put up on the wall.

This is a project that I started over 10 years ago and have pulled out again, so it is taking some time to figure out what still needs to be made.  Last night I realized that I still need to make another 80 or so of these units:

There are quite a few of the pieces cut out and ready to be sewn together.  It is such fun to play with these fabrics from so many years ago, like visiting with old friends.

Stash Report Sunday

I have made a little progress on my Storm at Sea quilt this week, but it was all fabric that had already been cut, so no reduction in stash.  I was given two pillow shams that I am taking apart and turning back into yardage.  There are nice big pieces on the back, and beautiful Kaffe Fassett prints on the front.

Here is a photo of one of the shams.  The other has already been turned back into fabric pieces.  Aren't the fabrics great together!

Design Wall Monday

While going through my many UFOs, I discovered this Storm at Sea quilt that I started in 2001.  For some reason, now seems like the time to get back to work on it.  I still like the fabrics, and this pattern has been one I wanted to make for a long time.

I am currently putting together the components of it into blocks.  I am struggling to figure out what to do for the border.  Here are two options that I am considering.  The first was my original plan, but I'm not sure it really works.  The second has the points floating in the border.  Any opinions are welcome!

2012 Stash Report #1

This is my first stash report of 2012, and also my first blog post ever.  As I was going through old projects last weekend to put together a UFO list, I found a Storm at Sea quilt that I started in 2001!  I had most of the parts cut out and many components put together.  This week I have been making more units, starting to join them into blocks, and trying to figure out a clever way to piece the outer edges to form a border design.

Unfortunately, since everything I've sewn on the Storm at Sea was already cut out, I haven't used up any of my stash.  However, the good news is that I didn't buy anything either.  I went to Intown Quilters in Decatur, GA yesterday for the kickoff of their new Scrap Club.  As always, they have lots of beautiful fabrics to drool over, but since I am not shopping for a particular project, it was a little easier to resist buying.
