Stash Report and Stitching Time 8/31/2025

My stash report posts (and all other blog posts) have been missing in action since early in the month, but I have a good reason--we went to Alaska! It was the trip of a lifetime, with time spent in Anchorage and at Denali National Park, followed by a fantastic cruise from Seward to Vancouver, BC. We got home late Monday night, and I'm finally feeling like I've adjusted back to normal life.

We saw all sorts of wildlife, plus lots of amazing scenery, but I thought I would share a couple of photos geared more to the quilting audience. This garment was in the Anchorage Museum, but I don't have any information about it.

We saw this wall of hexie panels outside a food court in Seward.

There are some small changes to the stash that have happened this month. Of course I visited quilt shops when I had the chance in Alaska, but showed great restraint in my purchases, adding less than 2 yards to the stash (some fat quarters and one panel.) We didn't see the Aurora Borealis, but these remind me of it.

The usage for the month happened before we left town. I used 1-5/8 yards to enlarge both the top and the back of my Star Pulse quilt, plus the binding (see it HERE.) I also used 1/2 yard for a simple tote bag made as a guild project.

Thanks to lots of prep before we left for Alaska, I had plenty of applique with me and found time to work on it every day except one. It sure felt good to get back to my sewing room this week!

Stash Report and Stitching Time 8/3/2025

My stash report doesn't show any changes for the past week. Most of my quilting time was spent on quilt guild projects with fabric that did not come from my stash. I also worked on quilting a small quilt, but all of the fabric used in that project has already been reported.

July 2025, Temperature Quilt blocks

I did spend some time yesterday getting caught up on making blocks for my temperature quilt. When I put them up on the wall together, it was quite a surprise  to see how little variation there had been in temperatures for the month of July. The diamonds in the blocks indicate the high temperature for each day, and they varied from 86 degrees up to 99 just a few days ago. Each color represents a 3 degree range of temperature.

The background in each block indicates the low temp for that day, and the lack of variety there is especially striking. Except for the one block in the top row with the greenish-yellow background, there are only two other fabrics for the lows. The yellow is for lows of 73-75 degrees, and the deep orange shows lows of 76-78 degrees. It was a very warm month, but we are now getting a dramatic change for the next several days, with forecasts for our high temps in the mid 70's.

I'll add up the yardage used for these blocks at a later date, probably combining it with the temperature blocks from another month or two.

Along with the temperature blocks, I machine quilted a small quilt plus enjoyed a guild sewing day working on a community service project. It was another 7-for-7 week!

Stash Report and Stitching Time 7/27/2025

My stash report is currently headed in the wrong direction, with the addition of some new fabric but no usage to report for this week. I've spent plenty of time sewing, but most of it used fabric that had either already been counted in an earlier stash report, or the fabric used didn't come from my stash, like a new guild project.

The fabrics added to the stash were purchased to supplement what I already have been using for my temperature quilt. I was worried about running out of some colors before the end of the year. I might not need all of them, but I'd rather have extra than run short. The fabric line is "Glaze" by Libs Elliott for Andover. 5.5 yards added to the stash.

Net added in 2025:    10.375 yards

Kate's 15 Minutes to Stitch Challenge at Life in Pieces has us tracking how many days each week we get in at least 15 minutes of quilting time. I finished joining blocks together for a small quilt top at the beginning of the week. After that, most of my quilting time was centered on an upcoming guild project, making library tote bags.

My first challenge was figuring out how to use a friend's overlock machine, because she is going to be out of town for our sewing day next week. Unfortunately, I broke a needle on my first attempt, which delayed progress for a couple days. I was able to get the machine running properly by the end of the week and finished off a couple of tote bags. I also cut out 30-35 more bags for our upcoming sewing day, all from fabric that had been donated.

Stash Report and Stitching Time 7/20/2025

There was plenty of quilting action happening around here this week, yet my stash report shows no changes. I did finish quilting and binding one quilt, the Quarter Log Cabins (you can see it HERE,) but it was made with fabrics from our quilt guild's Community Service stash. I also blogged about my Scrappy Colorwash "Terry" quilt top, but all of the fabrics in that top had been counted in earlier stash reports. I'll include a photo of it again just because I hate having a blog post with no photos. (Okay, also because I'm really happy with how it turned out.)

Kate's 15 Minutes to Stitch Challenge at Life in Pieces has us tracking how many days each week we get in at least 15 minutes of quilting time. After finishing the Quarter Log Cabins quilt, I got caught up with the blocks for my Temperature Quilt, then switched over to making more blocks for the Jane Stickle sampler quilt. It's too hot to be outside much, and I spent many happy hours in my quilting room this week.

Stash Report and Stitching Time 7/13/2025

My quilting time this week was mostly focused on two different projects. One was to quilt a Log Cabin quilt that was made as a community service project for our guild. I hope to finish the quilting and binding on that before our next meeting on Thursday.

My other project for the week was to make myself a new purse. The purse I've been using for almost two years is one I made myself, and it was getting faded and worn out. Here's a photo from when it was new.

I decided to use the same pattern again, making very minor changes to it. The pattern is Daytripper II from byannie.com.

This time around, I used a black spotted batik for the outside of the bag. I'm hoping that the tight weave of the batik will hold up a little better than the Jinny Beyer border stripe did. The zipper across the front is at the top of a large outer pocket, and I added a hidden smaller pocket inside there.

The lining is another batik, this time in grey. You can see the inside pocket, which is just the right size for my cell phone. This version of the purse was my first time using Soft and Stable as the inside structure, which gave some good support to the bag. My previous one had Quilter's Dream black polyester batting in it, which was much softer.

I used 1.25 yards of fabric for the new purse, and there were no new additions to the stash this week.

Net added in 2025:      4.875 yards

Kate's 15 Minutes to Stitch Challenge at Life in Pieces has us tracking how many days each week we get in at least 15 minutes of quilting time. The combination of making the new purse and quilting the Log Cabin quilt added up to well over 15 minutes of stitching time every day.

Stash Report and Stitching Time 6/29/2025

It has been a busy week in the sewing room, which is normal around here. The part that is unusual is the fact that I finished assembling three different quilt tops this week. One was my colorwash "Terry" blocks, with over 500 blocks in the quilt. I need to get photos of that one and write a blog post. Another was a quilt top made last summer that I thought was done, but I decided to make it larger before I quilt it. I'm hoping to get that one quilted and finished in July.

The third quilt top completed this week was a Stack & Whack project made in preparation for a recent demonstration. All that needed to be done was adding the border. The main fabric is called "Galaxy Garden" by Jason Yenter for In the Beginning, and the date on the selvage says 2000! It makes a very bright baby quilt.

Stack & Whack Galaxy Garden
41.5" square

My stash usage for the week includes 3/4 yard for the border of the Galaxy Garden quilt top, plus 1/2 yard for the binding on my most recent finish, Chinese Coins. You can see that quilt HERE. No new fabric was added to the stash.

2025 STASH TOTALS

Added last week:                0.0 yards
Added year to date:           51.0 yards
Net added in 2025:      9.625 yards

Kate's 15 Minutes to Stitch Challenge at Life in Pieces has us tracking how many days each week we get in at least 15 minutes of quilting time. Finishing those three quilt tops completely filled my week, with well over 15 minutes spent on them each day.

2025 Total         178 of 179 days
Success rate                99.4 %

Since we are only a couple days from the mid-point of the year, I've been looking over my records for completions so far in 2025. I'm very happy to see that I've finished the same number of quilts so far this year (9) as the last two years combined. You can see them all on my Finished Quilts page. Granted, all of the finished quilts are on the small side, mostly baby quilts and wall hangings, but it still feels great to have them done. Four of them were UFO's, one of them dating back to 1998! I sure hope this finishing trend continues through the second half of the year.

Stash Report & Stitching Time 6/22/2025

A great deal of my quilting time this week was spent preparing to do a demonstration at our quilt guild meeting. I had volunteered to demonstrate how to do "Stack & Whack" quilting, and needed a few new samples to share. I used a large-scale vegetable print fabric for the first set of blocks.

I still have more of the same fabric stacked and ready to be turned into blocks, but I'm not sure I want to make a whole quilt from them. I'm currently thinking they'd be great for placemats.

The other set of blocks I made this week had already been cut out several years ago and were just waiting in my bin of Stack & Whack samples and fabrics. These blocks have already been joined together with the red-orange setting fabric, and I'm planning to add a border of the main print to turn this into a baby quilt.

Total fabric used for the week was 2 yards, and no new fabric was added to the stash.

Stash Report and Stitching Time 6/15/2025

Last week's stash report never happened for me because our internet wasn't working when I sat down to write my post. I ended up moving to the sewing machine instead and didn't get back to the computer at all that day. This post covers the past two weeks.

I've been chipping away at my net added number on the stash totals, with 3 yards used over the past two weeks and no new fabric added. The fabric used included 1.5 yards for a border-stripe tablerunner, which was shared in an earlier post HERE. Yesterday I made six napkins from the coordinating daisy print to match that runner, using another 1.5 yards.

I still have more of the daisy border-stripe fabric left. Originally I had planned to make multiple tablerunners from it, keeping one for us and donating the others for our quilt guild's booth at the Christmas market. The guild is not participating in the market this year, so I think I will make some matching placemats instead.

Stash Report and Stitching Time 6/1/2025

The changes to my stash report for the last week were small, but I did manage to use a little fabric. Our guild had a speaker from a local quilt shop recently, and she told us about a mystery quilt program that they were offering. Yesterday was the one-day "Starlight Mini Mystery," and I followed their clues to piece this little quilt top.

Starlight Mini Mystery quilt top
21.5" square

The mystery quilt instructions called for 6 fat quarters, but in reality didn't use anywhere near that much. I'm calling it 5/8 yard used. That's a tiny dent in the bin of patriotic fabrics. I'm thinking about adding some borders to bring it up to a more useful size, maybe a baby quilt. Stay tuned...

I spent some time quilting every day last week, and I even did some garment sewing. I made a blouse for my mother, copying one she already has that fits her well. It felt good to flex my patternmaking skills again.

Stash Report and Stitching Time 5/25/25

There are no changes to my stash report for the last week, even though I spent plenty of time quilting. My main projects were a 3-yard quilt for a guild community service project, but it was made from guild fabrics, not mine. I also spent lots of time putting more of my "Terry" blocks up on the design wall. I shared some photos in yesterday's post, and here is the next phase.

There are only a few more colors to add to the wall, plus there's sure to be plenty of rearranging of blocks. I would love to get this top together by the end of the month, but that might be unrealistic.
