Design Wall Monday 8/27/12

The hexagon wallhanging is really starting to come together.  I have all the hexagons joined into large groupings.  Once those sections are joined together, the pieced center gets sewn to the light green batik background.  I haven't decided if there will be any borders.  Then it's on to the quilting (my least favorite part of the process.)

We got home on Saturday and discovered a package on the front steps--the return of my Hoffman Challenge quilt from last year.  It was like an old friend coming to visit.

Stash Report Sunday 8/26/12

I didn't think I would have anything to report for my stash this week, but ended up making an unexpected trip to the quilt shop yesterday.  It was a beautiful day and we had nothing planned, so we drove up to Dahlonega in north Georgia.  Magical Threads is a lovely quilt shop there, and I stop in anytime we are in town.  I already had the Jinny Beyer border print on the left that matches the new piece on the right.  Love those fall colors!

Design Wall Monday 8/13/12

There is finally definite progress to show on my hexagons.  In an attempt to speed up the process, I switched from English paper piecing to marking stitching lines on the back of each hexagon and sewing them together by machine.  Lots of stop & go, but still faster than those tiny little hand stitches.

The two "flowers" on the right side were done with English paper piecing, the two on the left were sewn by machine, and the two in the center have the hexagons sewn in vertical columns that need to be joined together.  Still one more "flower" to construct.

This doesn't mean I am giving up on English paper piecing.  I like the portability of that method.  It just didn't work for this project because of my deadline for finishing (mid-September.)

Stash Report Sunday 8/12/12

I have been spending as much time as possible working on my hexagons wallhanging, but counting the yardage will have to wait until the top is finished.  No other changes this week.

Design Wall Monday 8/6/12

I finally finished up a project yesterday.  I had this angel panel that I got at Hancock's of Paducah a year or two ago.  I did some free motion quilting on it and added the dark blue binding--nothing fancy or complicated, just wanted to show off the beautiful panel.  My sister-in-law collects angels, and this is a birthday gift for her.

My other recent project is the continuing saga of the hexagons.  I finished up the second medallion with English paper piecing, but realized that there is no way to get five more medallions made, joined together and quilted by mid-September.  I decided to try marking the stitching lines on the back of the hexagons and sewing them together by machine.  It seems to be working okay, and is definitely faster than hand stitching.

Stash Report Sunday 8/5/12

Like so many others have been commenting today, sewing time is hard to come by lately.  I did finish up a quilted wallhanging panel for my sister-in-law.  It was finished today, which also happens to be her birthday.  Talk about coming in just under the wire!  I will show it on my design wall tomorrow.
