Rainbow LeMoyne Stars

My current focus for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge is trying to decide on the fabrics for sashing and borders with my 12" Rainbow LeMoyne Stars. I have come up with a couple of different options. There were twelve blocks done, but I wasn't happy with my green star, so it has been taken apart to be remade.

The first option (above) has a black and white check for the sashing, and I would add cornerstones from a mostly black print. The border would probably be the colorful wavy striped fabric (I am hoping to save the circle print for a future project.)

Version two (below) has the colorful fabric for sashing and borders, plus a mostly black print for cornerstones. This might work with an inner border of the same black and white check as above. Again, I would probably choose the wavy stripes rather than the circles.

I am totally undecided on whether I really like either of these choices. Maybe it will be easier to choose after I get the green star back together and put all the parts up on the wall together. Once again, I would love to hear your opinions.

  2. I always struggle with sashing and border decisions. I like the black and white better than the rainbows. Maybe a solid? I'd hate for the border to draw attention away from your beautiful blocks.

  3. That's a hard choice. Rather than sashing do you have enough of your background fabric to frame each block in another border? I'm thinking border your light backgound blocks with the black and then the black with the light, then set them together that way. That should showcase the blocks without the distraction of adding another fabric to the mix.

    1. I don't have much of the black background fabric. I was thinking I would use that idea with some of my smaller LeMoyne Star blocks.

  4. I like the black and white - I think it makes your stars pop. They really are beautiful!

  5. Great blocks! You've put so much effort into making them I think you want them to be the focus of your quilt. Using the busy stripes and spots takes the focus to the outside and the stars get lost. I think the small checks or a solid would focus your main work but it is your quilt and your decision. Good luck with it!

  6. I like the black and white better, but I also aim for a more subdued palette, so what do I know?

  7. Such beautiful stars! Great work Julie. I would definitively go with the b/w check. Gosh it looks so good with that fabric. Do you have enough to do the sashing and the border in the b/w check? Because I think it really looks good the way you have it in the first picture (minus the rainbow fabric). The way the fabric plays in the stars they appear to be twinkling and, in my humble opinion, the rainbow fabric tries to steal the sparks from the stars. You know I mean. It would look good with just a black binder after the border. But that's just my humble opinion. I looooove this quilt. Great job.

  8. as beautiful as the colorful fabric is, I prefer letting those outstanding blocks shine in the neutral sashing. LeeAnna at not afraid of color

  10. I like the first fabric (black/white) for sashing. The colorful ones are pretty, but the more subdued fabric really draws the attention to your beautiful star blocks. Another suggestion would be a dark gray solid. Just my 2 cents worth . . . can't wait to see what you decide. :o)

  11. I like b/w best for sashing. I'm not a good person to ask, though...I'm not a border or sashing person! Your stars are gorgeous.
