Stitching and DeStashing--Weeks 6 & 7, 2019

It's Sunday, which means time for another stash report. I missed posting last week, so today's report covers the last two weeks. My yardage used covers 8 yellow blocks for the Stair Steps quilt, plus one Framed Crumb Star block, all made as part of the Rainbow Scrap Challenge. You can see all of my new blocks in yesterday's post. This was another week (actually two weeks) without any new fabric added to the stash.

It has been difficult to settle back into a regular routine of quilting time lately. Over the past two weeks I was able to spend at least 15 minutes a day quilting on 11 of the 14 days. Progress has been slow on all of my recent projects.

Scrappy Rainbow Saturday--Week 7, 2019

There wasn't a whole lot of time for quilting over the past week, but I did manage to squeeze in some time for my Rainbow Scrap Challenge projects. We are working with yellow this month, and I made one yellow Framed Crumb Star block.

More yellow Stair Steps blocks were also completed last week. I was able to add four more blocks to the four from a week ago. This is my favorite way to lay out these blocks so far, but of course it could change at any time.

Scrappy Rainbow Saturday: Week 6, 2019

This has been a good week for pulling out the sunny yellow scraps to use in my Rainbow Scrap Challenge projects. We had some gorgeous, warm days mid-week, including a high of 80 degrees on Thursday! The beautiful yellow scraps are a good match for the daffodils that are popping up all over the neighborhood. 

My yellow blocks include this week's Tiny Tuesday blocks. As usual, somehow I ended up with one extra. They are so little and cute, plus quick and easy--I couldn't resist!

My other yellow blocks for the week are the first four Stair Steps blocks. The pieces have been cut to make four more over the weekend.

I received an email last week asking about the pattern I am using for the Stair Steps blocks. I don't have a real pattern, just figured out my own from seeing similar blocks here and there. 

Here are the cutting directions for one 6" block:

Black-on-white print: Cut 6 squares @ 1.5"

Grey and black prints: cut one each

1.5" x 1.5"

1.5" x 2.5"

1.5" x 3.5"

1.5" x 4.5"

1.5" x 5.5"

Cut the same sizes from the yellow (or color of your choice) fabrics as you just cut from the black and grey fabrics.

Stitching and DeStashing--Week 5, 2019

For the first time in months, probably since Thanksgiving, we had what felt like a normal week at work--no overtime, no insane deadlines, just plugging away at the next batch of projects. Several people were even able to take their long-delayed New Year's holiday during the week (we had to work on New Year's day.) It was a huge relief to have things settle back down there.

The more typical work schedule also meant I could get closer to my usual quilting routine, which generally means spending some time in the sewing room after dinner. I was able to get at least 15 minutes in every single day this week!

2019 Total        30 of 33 days

My fabric  usage for the past week was a total of 5/8 yard for my Tiny Tuesday blocks and for the last hexies surrounding my Scrap Hexies stars. Here is a shot from the border fabric auditions. (I think I will use the circle fabric shown on the left.) No new fabric has been added to the stash yet this year!

Scrappy Rainbow Saturday: Week 5, 2019

Just as suspected last week, I have started far too many new projects for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge over the past month. There's no way I can keep up with all of these. Let me show you what I'm talking about (regular RSC readers will have seen some of the following photos already.) All measurements listed are finished block sizes.

Here is a shot of most of these blocks together on the design wall. The missing blocks are the 30's Pinwheels and the Rolling 9-Patches, which I have already decided not to continue with as 2019 RSC projects.

Rainbow Scrap Challenge blocks, January, 2019

Oh no! EIGHT PROJECTS?! How in the world did that happen? Here I thought I wasn't doing much quilting in January. Just shows how wrong you can be. I certainly won't be able to keep up with all of these for the rest of the year. The current plan is to keep going on the following:

1. Orange Peels

2. Tiny Tuesday sampler 

3. Stair Steps

4. Framed Crumb Star

5. Crumb blocks (tentative) 

Doing the Orange Peels provides my needed applique project for the train ride to work. I enjoy following along on the RSC sampler projects, and I can't wait to play with different layouts of those Stair Steps blocks. The Framed Crumb Star means I need to make at least one crumb block each month. Who knows how many more might happen. There, I guess I've settled on my RSC plan for 2019!

Don't worry about the projects that didn't make the cut; they will be delayed until another time. The red 30's Pinwheels will join the other finished pinwheel blocks in my box of 30's projects, and there may be other colors joining them occasionally but not every month. The Rolling 9Patch blocks may become a little wall-hanging or table topper, perhaps with some more red blocks added because I have extra 9-patches already made. The string blocks will join some others from the past and wait for the right time to be used.

It's time for me to make this week's Tiny Tuesday block, then start pulling out the yellow scraps for February. What are you making with your scraps?
