It felt so good to get all of the orange blocks for my three Rainbow Scrap Challenge projects finished early in the month. That is definitely preferable to procrastinating until the last week, then scrambling to get them done in time! Here is the collection of orange scrappiness.
This quilt was started as a block of the month by Judy Laquidara at Patchwork Times in 2014. I was doing great with keeping up every month until late in the year when we got to the pieced border. It was around then that I realized I had used the wrong fabric for my setting triangles. My triangles are all pieced from black fabrics instead of the blue/turquoise prints that should have been used, making the quilt top seem very dark around the outside edges. It should look more like Judy's quilt below--our color schemes are very similar, except that the green in hers has been switched to turquoise in mine.
I had been planning to just keep going and live with my mistake, but I know I won't ever be satisfied with the way it looks. I'm considering removing the black setting triangles and remaking them in turquoise. The photo of my quilt top shows one sample triangle in turquoise along the side. It will be a lot of work, especially setting in the new triangles, but I know I will be much happier with the finished result.

Since my blocks were done early, I pulled out an old project that included orange in the color scheme. My "Tell It to the Stars" quilt just needed the pieced border finished, then one last plain border added. The pieced border is now complete! You can only see a portion of the quilt because it is so large.

All of your oranges look great! I can see why the pieced border on your other quilt took a while, but it looks great. I think you could leave the setting triangles just as they are. They look fantastic and no one will know they're the "wrong" color unless you say so. You could use the bright blue for a binding! Just an idea!
ReplyDeleteI agree with Mari, no one will notice what you call a mistake. This quilt is gorgeous! Love your orange blocks too
ReplyDeleteJulie I’m cheering you on! You know what you can live with it. One down 13 to go. Just chip away at it and you’ll be done before you know it
ReplyDeleteGreat orange blocks. The Star scraptastics are definitely my favourites. The replacement borders sound a lot of work but I understand what you mean about never being satisfied with the finished quilt if you don't change them. Good luck and happy sewing.
ReplyDeleteHow about a compromise. Just replace half the black set in triangle with turquoise one, providing there would be an equal number of both. Half the work and a unique finish.

Very nice orange blocks. Beautiful star quilt.
ReplyDeleteI will be sad to see Orange go but I am ready for a new RSC color. It is always difficult to make the decision to take apart a quilt. If it is one you are keeping, it will be worth the time. But if you are giving it away, I bet the new owner will live it just the way it is. Thanks for sharing with Oh Scrap!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on getting all your orange's done before the end of the month. That can be quite the challenge. Good luck with your border do over, I do like the turquoises pieced border better, but it will be a lot of work. I've learned it is worth it to fix those problems when you have the chance otherwise you wish you had.
ReplyDeleteI remember you working on the Stars. Sorry to hear you had a border problem. I wouldn't have noticed! It looks wonderful to me!
ReplyDeleteEither edging color will look great for your UFO. Nice job on using so many ORANGE scraps this month!!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful orange bloks each and every one. Yes it will be a lot of work to rip, but like you said it will be worth it to make it what you really wanted in the first place.
ReplyDeleteI'm loving your gray background fabric in the squares.
ReplyDeleteI love all of your blocks!
