Back to Purple Scraps

Our Rainbow Scrap Challenge color for February is green-blue (think teal, turquoise, aqua, etc.) I made two sets of Scrappy Trips blocks using gradations of those colors and got many positive comments on them (see them HERE.) That convinced me to go back and make a new set of purple blocks to replace these earlier blocks from January that do not use a gradation of color.

I made five new purple gradation blocks, but once I got them up on the wall, I wasn't sure how I liked them together. There are two blocks that are definitely more reddish-violet, two are more true purple, and one has a bluish-grey tone. I'm wishing I had mixed the different varieties of purple together instead of segregating them into separate blocks. Here are some of my options for combining the blocks.

Combination #1

Combination #2

Combination #3

Combination #4
My first thought when I finished these blocks and put them up on the wall was to take them all apart and try again, but I really don't want to spend all that time remaking them. Of the four different combinations, I think my top choice would be #1 or #3. I'd love to hear your opinions/suggestions!

I am linking up with the Rainbow Scrap Challenge on Saturday and at Oh Scrap! over at Quilting is more fun than Housework on Sunday. Be sure to check out all of the wonderful scrappy projects at both places.

  1. There is no right or wrong. Why not resist sewing them together until you have enough of all colors to do a quilt. Then perhaps their final placement will be decided by their neighboring blocks (the blue-purples next to a blue neighbor, for instance) to give you a more nuanced gradation in the quilt.

  2. 1 & 3 are my favourite as well, with 3 edging ahead slightly. Love the blocks!

  3. Sorry to Mayeye my eye they all look pretty close to the same. I would just go with what makes you happy.

  4. I agree with Cathy - waiting seems like a sound plan. Colors are always influenced by their neighbors!

  5. Lovely graduation of purples--I like No. 4 a lot...but they are all pretty--difficult choice for sure--but a fun thing to do...hugs, Julierose

  6. Your blocks are so pretty that I am sorry to hear you are not satisfy with your choice of fabric. Let them be; maybe they will grow on you. In any case, once you add some red, pink and real blue blocks to the lot, your eyes might tell you another story about these purple blocks. I think that time will be your best allies here. But that is just me thinking out loud. ;^)

  7. I vote for 1 and 3 as well. Keep the blocks as they are; once you have a year's worth of RSC blocks and assemble them all, I think everything will look fine.

  8. I like #3 but I think they all look great. These are going to make a lively quilt. Thanks for sharing with Oh Scrap!

  9. I liked Cathy's advice to wait, too, but scrappy quilts always seem to work out no matter what you do. I think your blocks are so pretty with all the different purples you have! I like the lighter squares running through the middle!

  10. I like your graduation of color, the first on this page is interesting and more scrappy looking but the graduation adds a different dimension.
I agree with Cathy too and see were you stand later, it will be easier to balance out the tones and colors then and you many have a hundred more really cool ideas on placement then.

  11. I would vote for #3. I like the graduated colors in the blocks. The large block looks balanced if you stagger the colors like you have.
