I have most of my groups of blocks stitched together into columns. I switched the September blocks to yellows instead of reds, and I am using my red scraps to make a different set of blocks than Angela chose. I still need to make four more of the red Ohio Star blocks.
The only blocks that I'm not sure I will include in the quilt are the grey blocks on the left side--they don't include any background fabric, and they seem too solid and square to me. It's possible I will remake them into another design, or I might just leave them out completely. I am also considering adding narrow background strips between the columns in order to make joining them together easier (less bulk and no seam matching!)

The gray blocks could become a column down the back or be turned into placemats or pillows. I agree that they don't play as well with your columns as the other colors do.
ReplyDeleteThe grey does seem a little out of place, but it might be worthwhile shuffling your columns around slightly and putting it in between two rather bright colors -- like in between your red and orange columns. Could potentially be less drab there as compared to on the edge next to the dark blue.

ReplyDeleteWow, what a beauty that will be! The gray blocks could also become part of the backing. I love that you freely switched the red and yellow design sizes; those sizes/colors were a big question mark for me. My RSC top is done, but not nearly as artistic as yours. What a difference a little experience and foresight makes! Great job!
ReplyDeleteVery fun blocks. Maybe you could salvage some of the gray blocks by making a few with the background fabric and alternate those with the darker ones. Or use them as part of the back.

ReplyDeleteYou have some lovely blocks, a great job. I agree the grey does not belong at all on the front. Your strip idea is good thinking, and I wonder if you would be putting on a border. It would keep the white areas in the blocks from bleeding off the edges. Good luck with the finish!

ReplyDeleteNo, I don't think the gray blocks play well in that layout either but I might try it in other spots like the middle or something before I completely gave up on it for the quilt.
