This is going to be my next UFO to work on. I had originally tried to design a pieced border to finish it off, but none of the ideas I tried seemed to work. That is why it has been packed away in a box for so many years. Now I believe the thing to do is make 12 more blocks, which will add one more row at the top and bottom. That brings the size up to 58.5 x 78", a good size for a throw quilt. It could become a QOV if I don't decide to keep it for myself.
The only problem now is that I have run out of one of the red fabrics. This close-up of the center shows a possible substitute fabric laid over some logs on the left side. Once the additional 12 blocks are done, I will decide where to put those blocks in the quilt--whether they become the extra rows top & bottom or if I should mix them in with the rest of the quilt.
Here is a photo of the fabric that has been used up (at the top) and the one that I plan to use as a substitute. The new fabric is darker than the original, but it should be ok. However, if anyone has some of that top fabric and could spare 1/4 yard or so, you would make my day!
As usual, I will be linking up to Patchwork Times for Design Wall Monday. Check out all the great inspiration there.

What a beautiful quilt. I think you had trouble with the border because it didn't need a pieced border: way too busy in the middle. I really like this log cabin pattern!
ReplyDeletelove this
ReplyDeleteVery cool quilt. Mix the new blocks in and I doubt the substituted fabrics will be noticeable.
ReplyDeleteWhat a coincidence. I took that class with Mary Ellen too and just unearthed it for the UFO parade. I hope to be able to post it soon as FINISHED. Love your version. What fabric are you missing? I might have it in my stash--I still have lots circa 1996!!
ReplyDeleteI just added a photo to the post showing the fabric I ran out of, plus my planned substitute. I probably bought the fabric at a Minnesota Fabrics or Joann's back in '95 or '96.
DeleteGorgeous quilt. Good luck with all the UFOs. so far my oldest is from 2000 and I need to git er done.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful quilt!
ReplyDeleteHi Julie! That is one lovely quilt--I also love the curviness! Great job--hugs, Julierose
ReplyDeleteExcellent quilt. The motion is so fluid. Great job!!!
ReplyDeleteWow! When I saw that quilt the first thing to pop into my head was that the movement was great!
ReplyDeleteIt's a beautiful design. Adding a slightly different red print for the remaining blocks will enhance the overall quilt, rather than detract from it.
ReplyDeleteHi, Julie - I emailed a scan of fabric to your gmail account. I think it's close. I'd be glad to send it if you think it will work. You can email me ila@wideopenwest.com or kissmystash@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteThe quilt will certainly have great movement.
