Stash Report Sunday

Another week with not much sewing, but plenty of fabric has been turned into strips.  I have been slicing up many of my blue fabrics to go into the bins for scrap quilts.  I love the look of scrap quilts, but haven't made many because in the past it took so long to cut fabrics.  Right now I am concentrating on red and blue.  This gives me a great variety of sizes all ready to be used.

I did manage to put together my second string star.  The hardest part was matching up the seams near the center.

Used year to date:  2-7/8 yards

Added this week:  0 yards

Added year to date:  2 yards
Net year to date:  7/8 yards used

Design Wall Monday

My design wall hasn't changed much this week.  On the left is the Storm at Sea quilt.  I love the way this quilt is coming together, but I just haven't had enough time to get the remaining parts for it made.   I would love to finish up and get this one together.

The blocks on the right are from the monthly scrap club at Intown Quilters in Decatur, GA.  The upper star has been pieced together with the background.  I had some trouble getting the seams to line up at the center, but otherwise it looks good.  I love the bright blue ring around the center.

Stash Report Sunday

It looks like I missed reporting last week, but there hasn't been much of a change.  Quilting time is very limited lately.  I did put together one of the scrappy string stars from the scrap club at Intown Quilters.  I also cut lots of blue fabrics into strips for this scrappy project, but that doesn't count as using up the fabric, does it?  It just got moved from the shelf into the bins of strips.

Design Wall Monday

This week I took a break from my seemingly endless Storm at Sea piecing to put together a block for the Scrap Club at Intown Quilters in Decatur, GA.  This terrific quilt shop has started a monthly program led by Taffy McLaughlin where we meet to learn about different techniques for using our scraps. 

In January we worked on a sashing pattern of small squares set on point.  The blocks in the pattern were 15" finished size before the sashing. I simplified mine to finish at 12" including the sashing.

This month we learned about using templates of different types.  I really liked one of Taffy's samples with 8-point stars.  Afterwards I came home and cut strips from many of my blue fabrics.  I made strip sets of different reds and blues, then cut 45 degree diamonds from them.  It has been great fun playing with the different ways I can arrange the pieces. 

I am thinking I will use red and blue scraps with a light background fabric to make at least one block each month based on the demonstrations at the scrap club.  These stars were so much fun that I might make several more.  I hope to end up with enough different blocks to put together into a quilt at the end of the year.

Design Wall Monday

Is anyone getting tired of seeing photos of this Storm at Sea quilt?  Quilting time has been very limited lately, so my progress is quite slow.  It doesn't help any that I changed plans for the pieced border, and the new design requires even more blocks.  What you see in the photo above will be the center of the quilt.

Here are the different units that go into this quilt.  There will be 110 of the nine-patch square in a square, and I have finished 67 of them, plus I have made the 9-patches for the rest.  The mostly blue ones are for the center, and the light ones are part of the border.  These finish at 6".

There are also smaller square-in-a-square units that finish at 3".  Again, the ones with all blue corners are for the center, and the others for the border.  I need 90 altogether and have 56 made.

Then there are these little beauties.  I made them using the Tri-Recs tools for cutting.  There will be 199 of these in the quilt, and I have 98 completed, plus more partially done.  They will measure 3" x 6" finished.

Lots of cutting and sewing still to be done.  I am trying not to stress out over how long it is taking and just enjoy the time spent working with these beautiful fabrics.  It's surprising that I still like the fabrics so much considering they are all at least 10 years old!

Yesterday I finally got around to taking down the Christmas Lone Star quilt that was hanging in my sewing room.  There is a space between two windows that works better as a spot to display quilts rather than as a design wall.  With all the warm weather we have had lately, it seemed right to go with something for spring, so I put up my "Pretty in Plaid" applique quilt.  This pattern is in the Piece O' Cake book Contemporary Classics in Plaids & Stripes.

Stash Report Sunday

We had a crazy week at work, which meant not much quilting got done last week. No fabric added to the stash and nothing used either.  My net total stays at zero.

I continued making parts for the Storm at Sea quilt.  I have about 50 more of these units to make.  I use the Tri-Recs rulers for cutting them.
