Rainbow Scrap Sampler Columns

All year long I have been following along with the Rainbow Scrap Challenge 2016 Sampler. Each month we have made a set of blocks in that month's chosen color, and the blocks get joined together into columns to make the quilt.

I have most of my groups of blocks stitched together into columns. I switched the September blocks to yellows instead of reds, and I am using my red scraps to make a different set of blocks than Angela chose. I still need to make four more of the red Ohio Star blocks.

The only blocks that I'm not sure I will include in the quilt are the grey blocks on the left side--they don't include any background fabric, and they seem too solid and square to me. It's possible I will remake them into another design, or I might just leave them out completely. I am also considering adding narrow background strips between the columns in order to make joining them together easier (less bulk and no seam matching!)

Be sure to check out all of the wonderful scrappy projects at the Rainbow Scrap Challenge every Saturday and at Oh Scrap! over at Quilting is more fun than Housework on Sunday.

  1. The gray blocks could become a column down the back or be turned into placemats or pillows. I agree that they don't play as well with your columns as the other colors do.

  2. The grey does seem a little out of place, but it might be worthwhile shuffling your columns around slightly and putting it in between two rather bright colors -- like in between your red and orange columns. Could potentially be less drab there as compared to on the edge next to the dark blue.

  3. Looking good! I would put the gray column on the back and maybe add in an aqua or turquoise column.

  4. Wow, what a beauty that will be! The gray blocks could also become part of the backing. I love that you freely switched the red and yellow design sizes; those sizes/colors were a big question mark for me. My RSC top is done, but not nearly as artistic as yours. What a difference a little experience and foresight makes! Great job!

  5. Very fun blocks. Maybe you could salvage some of the gray blocks by making a few with the background fabric and alternate those with the darker ones. Or use them as part of the back.

  6. So pretty! I like the idea of white in between, so you don't have to deal with all the bulk.

  7. The GRAY strip could go always go on the BACK of the quilt!

  8. You have some lovely blocks, a great job. I agree the grey does not belong at all on the front. Your strip idea is good thinking, and I wonder if you would be putting on a border. It would keep the white areas in the blocks from bleeding off the edges. Good luck with the finish!

  12. No, I don't think the gray blocks play well in that layout either but I might try it in other spots like the middle or something before I completely gave up on it for the quilt.

  13. It is looking great Julie! I am glad I used background fabric in the center of my Gray blocks so they are not so dark. Your red blocks are lovely! Thanks for sharing with Oh Scrap!

  14. Absolutely beautiful! Your colors are stunning! And I'm definitely in the skip-the-gray-ones camp. The rest of the quilt is so happy that it makes the gray column look extra sad...

  15. Your blocks look great all together! I too would maybe put those grey ones on the back?

  16. I am putting strips of fabric between my columns too. It seems to give the eye a place to rest.
