A Slow Start on the RSC

I have all sorts of plans and ideas for the 2016 Rainbow Scrap Challenge, but I'm having a hard time getting moving on any of them. I was very anxious to begin making 9-patch blocks for the Ring Cycles quilt I showed last week, but my background fabric didn't arrive until yesterday. There's another background on the way for Angela's column quilt.

Instead of working on any of my planned rainbow projects, I got distracted by a drawer full of 3" strips from a guild exchange many years ago. I am hoping to use up many of those strips on scrappy projects this year and get that drawer cleared out. I started with a variation on Bonnie Hunter's Scrappy Trips pattern. Her version calls for 2.5" strips; I am using 3" strips which give me 15" finished blocks. I have one block together and there's another one partially done. I am waiting to do the final pressing of my blocks when I am ready to join them together, which is why it doesn't look square or flat in the photo.

Be sure to check out all of the wonderful scrappy projects at the Rainbow Scrap Challenge every Saturday and at Oh Scrap! over at Quilting is more fun than Housework on Sunday.

  1. Sorry you are having problems getting the RSC blocks kicked off this year. I'm having similar issues. The scrappy trips block looks great.

  2. Scrappy Trips are wonderful quilts, and your blues will have a happy home in one! And any use of scraps is great! And I bet you still have plenty of scraps for Ring Cycles... :-)

  3. Waiting for background fabric, that is such a slow way to start a new project. But so necessary, hopefully once they arrive you will be up an moving.

  4. I can't wait to see your ring cycle quilt. I love this pattern. It is so easy to get distracted sewing. I guess that is why I have UFO's.

  6. I am sure your distractions will fade with the arrival of the ordered fabrics. It's frustrating when you are itching to get on with something and you can't because the fabric hasn't arrived.

  15. I've started sewing strips together for scrappy trips, but never got them any farther. Another one to finish sometime this year. Love the blues! Blessings, Gretchen

  18. I actually prefer to use 3" strips for Bonnie's Scrappy Trips blocks. When I'm planning a good size quilt anyway. I've used the same technique to make miniature blocks too. Definitely a great way to use up miscellaneous strips!

  19. Sometimes all we need to do is stitch - it doesn't matter on what - just stitch . . .
